There are many Articles around the web that describe how to install OS X on a normal PC. But there is no full guide who describes how to update 10.5.1 to 10.5.4. So here is it.
Upgrade 10.5.1 to 10.5.2
- Download the 10.5.2 Combo Update (search Google) 343MB
- Go to /System/Library/Extensions/
- Start Update
- When AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement.kext apperars, move it to trash immediatly
- The install finishes, but do NOT click the restartbutton!
- Go to /System/InstallAtStartup/scripts/ and open the file 1 with a texteditor
if you can’t access the folder- rightclick > Get Info
- at the bottom of the window it says Sharing & Permission, unlock it and click the plusbutton
- Select your Username, press Select and change your permissions to read & write
- Find the string /System/Library/Extensions/Dont Steal Mac OS X.kext and replace it with /System/Library/Extensions/dsmos.kext
- Save the file and restart
Update 10.5.2 to 10.5.3
- Download the 10.5.3 Combo Update (search Google) 536MB
- Repeat steps 2 to 8 from above
Update 10.5.3 to 10.5.4
Just start the Apple Softwareupdate, download and install the 10.5.4 update.
Now you should have running OS X 10.5.4!
If you’ve any problems write a comment and I’ll help you!
Thanks to netkas.org (Update 10.5.2/10.5.3) and Infintite Mac (Update 10.5.4).

I ran into a problem during the 10.5.2 -> 10.5.3 combo update.
Not quite sure what was responsible for it, but I was unable change the permissions to modify the ‘/System/InstallAtStartup/scripts/1’ file. Everytime I tried to open a Get Info screen, Finder would crash.
I tried sudo and su in the terminal… but I don’t think I had root access enabled. Probably would’ve been a better idea to enable root access then modify the file in the terminal, but I tried to boot into safe mode to modify the file and I had loads of fun…
What I ended up doing was booting into the install DVD, then opening up Terminal under the Utilities menu and editing the file in there. I used:
“/Volumes/Leopard/usr/bin/vi /Volumes/Leopard/System/InstallAtStartup/scripts/1”
A bit involved… but I’m on 10.5.3 now! Hope this helps someone!

I followed your steps i had kalway 10.5.1 installed on a dell latitude D620 it loads fine when i updated to 10.5.2 by following your steps it restarted and ten restarted again and was updated I tried to update to the kalyway 10.5.3 comboupdate and follow the same steps but there was no AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement.kext in the /System/Library/Extensions/ and there was no /System/Library/Extensions/Dont Steal Mac OS X.kext on eather time i looked for it but I did notice that it already said /System/Library/Extensions/dsmos.kext on the first update but the second neather one of those was listed when i tried to do the 10.5.3 update. So I left everything alone and rebooted it goes to the apple logo on window with the circle turning under the apple and once it tries to go past that I just get a black screen. Any ideas how to fix this?

Does USB detect still work after updating to 10.5.4? I’ve read several places that it doesn’t.
Can anyone confirm?
July 27, 2008 at 8:10 pm
jasonmac
@p: yes, i have the usb mouse and keyboard. I used them on my laptop and they worked fine :D (it’s wierd leopard 10.5.2 doesn’t recognize my laptop’s mouse pad and keyboard).
I did a research and read that I should replace the AppleACPIPlatform.kext (dont remember exactly how to spell it :D ) so I did and it generated an error about improperly install during my second upgrade to 10.5.3 and this fucked the whole thing. I have to reinstall 10.5.1 again.
And this time, I used the kalyway 10.5.2 combo update. After the installation and boot, everything worked fine including my mouse pad and keyboard …hooorayyyy…..:D
OK, but I need to upgrade to 10.5.3 so that I could install the current iPhone SDK. But this time, kalyway 10.5.3 combo update didn’t do it for me. now I have to reinstall the whole thing again (like usual :D )
I traced the issue during boot. It said:
“Failed to load extension com.apple.driver.AppleAHCIPort”
“Couldn’t alloc class AppleICH8AHCI”
“Couldn’t alloc class AppleAHCI”
Anyone know what’s this mean ?

jasonmac and others, you need to learn how to set up your system with a test partition so you don’t have to do a full reinstall of your os. You’ll find a wealth of information on insanelymac including how to properly fix your laptop keyboard and trackpad. BTW, I’m really curious why you need to install the iPhone SDK, you don’t seem to be a developer. You “traced the issue during boot”, you mean you booted in verbose mode so you could see where it halted?
As for does this still work or that? Depends and if you learn enough it’s all fixable except totally unsupported hardware. USB (working but the replug issue remains for many on certain hardware) PS2 can all work, you just need the right kext. The fun is figuring it all out. If you’re looking for an always up to date OS X install and ready for production then either be prepared to be patient and stay on top of the osx86 hacking community or by a Mac. For starters you may find this thread on im to be useful, there are many others. http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=109102

Hi and thanks for the guides,
I installed Kalyway 10.5.2, then the dual boot with Windows XP. Everything was fine.
Then i followed the above steps to upgrade to 10.5.3, and after the restart when I try to boot on OSX (with any of the ‘-x’ or ‘update -v’ options above), the PC just restarts without even trying to launch MAC OS…
Any idea?

to Arcy:
ty for the link, it helps me much.
Sorry for the confuse. English is not my native language and I’m completely new to this “mac on pc” stuffs. In fact, I just started on this a week ago.
But I don’t agree with you on the part “why you need to install the iPhone SDK, you don’t seem to be a developer”. You don’t need to be a real developer in order to install and use iPhone SDK. I don’t think I am a real developer but I do like programming and have programmed for several years and I find the fun on using my own developed apps on my own iPhone. They don’t have to be a sophisticated apps, just a simple texteditor or so would be fine to me (even though there’s already one in iPhone :D . Just try to get some basic knowledges of programming in a new OS environment. :D

Hi,
I build my system using an ASUS P5K-VM mobo, a 150G WD Raptor, 4Gig RAM and an XFX GeForce 8600 GTS. The system is dedicate to Mac OS X.
I went thru the Kalyway 10.5.2 installer. Then I tied to download and install 10.5.4 from apple, but the install crashed and my system wouldn’t boot. So I went thru the 10.5.2 installer again and then downloaded Kalyway 10.5.3 and installed it OK. I know have a stable 10.5.3, with some glitches:
1) I can’t wake up my system if it goes to sleep (so I disabled the sleep mode). Also after I shutdown, the system stays powered up most times forcing me to push and hold the power switch.
2) Occasionally after the system comes up, the USB Keyboard and mouse aren’t working (I use PS/2 devices merged into a single USB port). If I unplug and plug it (same port or not, same thing), then the keyboard works again and I can login.
3) Yesterday OS X crashed with a gray screen during boot, but booted fine after powering the system up again. If I didn’t have 1) & 2) already, I wouldn’t be suspicious.
I appreciate any ideas. The way I built this system allows me to pull out the HD and plug another in (without opening the box) for testing purposes.

Is 1) a problem with the mobo (can be solved with a BIOS update)?
2) I can buy a USB keyboard no problem but, I use a Linksys KVM that with a PS/2 jack for the console, so I will need to use a USB -> PS2 converter to plug the keyboard into the console. Will that still be seen as a PS2 keyboard?
July 31, 2008 at 11:11 am

Try a BIOS update and tell us if it worked for you!

Q
Erasmix:
I’m using a PS2 adaptor for my USB mouse to be compatible with my PS2 keyboard, no problems. PS2 mouse/keyboard do work, but they have to be both PS2 not PS2/USB combo.
BTW, I’ve always used Kalyway’s combo updates, instead of the official updates, and I haven’t had any problems (yet). So I’m holding out against 10.5.4 until a Kalyway update is available.

I tried using this method to upgrade from 10.5.2 to 10.5.3 and now I’m getting a kernel panic at startup:
panic(cpu 0 caller 0x0040352B): “8259-PIC: registerInterrupt failed”@/Volumes/disk1s2/leo_xnu/xnu-1228/iokit/Kernel/IOLib.cpp:724
Does this have to do with me having a SSE2 computer? When I did the original install of the kalyway 10.5.2, I had to use the jas SSE2 patch option. Any help would be very much appreciated, thanks!

Hey,
I have a problem going from the 10.5.2 – 10.5.3 as well.
I tried doing the “-x” and the “update -v” methods but with the “-x” I get the Gray screen just loading on an on.. And with the “update -v” nothing happens at all.
When following the steps to install the 10.5.3 update I did not find the AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement.kext file nor did i find the Don’t Steal Mac OS`X.kext file. So I thought maybe it would work. So i rebooted, and got the Gray screen of constant loading.
Appreciate any help, Thank You

An update,
I reloaded 10.5.1 and followed the above method to 10.5.2 and when i read the 10.5.3 combo hack’s read me file, I decided to try that. It told me to install a different kernel and do the “update -v” on f8 on darwinx86 boot.
I did that, and after restarting once, I got past the grey screen and got to the part where my wallpaper displays. Then I got the “You Need to Restart the computer, please hold the restart button” etc. etc.

Got the same problem as Franck above.
I had Kalyway 10.5.1 (dual-boot with Windows XP), then used your procedure to upgrade to 10.5.2. Now every startup of OS X quickly falls back into a reboot.
With -x -v I see a lot of text fly by, but once the reboot starts it is off the screen — too soon for me to read it.
I went into your link to Netkas’s blog, and he mentions saving a couple of things before the start of the whole procedure. No mention of that here, so I didn’t do it. Has that something to do with this? Is there a way to recover?

I get the same reboot problem. The work around is to always startup OS X with the update option. I’ve tried many times already. OS X only starts if I update. Strange.
It’s not a big deal as everything seems to work fine once OS X is up and running. But it’s a bit annoying that it doesn’t work perfectly. Is there any permanent fix for this?
September 2, 2008 at 9:42 am

when I was updating 10.5.2 to 10.5.3. my system hanged during boot. I then recall someone mentioning using ‘update -f’. this seemed to fix my problem.
make sure you run the kernel package before the reboot, this is stated in the nfo!

I followed the steps to update from 10.5.2 to 10.5.3 exactly and now Leopard won’t boot at all.
I’ve tried -x and -v and neither of them work. I tried update -v and nothing happens at all.
Right now I am reinstalling 10.5.2 and I don’t think I will be updating again any time soon. Not unless someone can help me that is.
September 15, 2008 at 7:01 pm

No solution was found for the non-booting problem (GaryG and Franck have the same situation apparently). Have reinstalled 10.5.1, maybe I’ll try the “Kalyway combo update” package this time.

Yes, there’s no solution unless you download new mac osx.. iatkos 10.5.4 (but it is too slow…). Maybe direct download will help (but need pay some money to get it)
I also have a same problem with my Kalyway. I failed to update to 10.5.3 with a kernel panic resulted yesterday.. and my conclusion is I want to try to get iatkos 10.5.4. Tomorrow I am going vacation.. maybe next week I will download iatkos 10.5.4.
Don’t waste your time to combo update or upgrade because this hackintosh will get dizzy and flu.. Get a new one, I recommend iatkos 10.5.4

I have a working VMWare Workstation 6.0.4 image of Mac OSX 10.5.2. It is the image FreeBSD – 64 image that PCWIZ put together.
I need to update it to 10.5.4 at least so I can do iPhone dev. That is my whole purpose.
I have tried your method and many others and can’t seem to get any of them to work. They either continually reboot or stay in the grey screen and spin forever.
The one thing I am not sure of is what is the exact command line or thing you do when someone writes “Restart and boot with -v”?
Even better would be if anyone could please just make a working VMWare 6.0.4 image with 10.5.4 on it and send me a link????
Thanks.

I thought I might add to my request that I purchased a Mac OSX 10.5.4 DVD, so I am not trying to get something for free. I just can’t afford a full blown Mac right now, but would like to do Mac dev. I tried the Linux versions and they are a pain in the butt to get anything really done in. I wanted to give the official SDK a go.
If it works out then I will probably buy a Mac, but want to try before I buy.

I was able to make a new 10.5.1 installation on the empty space in my second partition. Mirgrating Applications and setting froze at the end but seemed to work. I didn’t have enough space to migrate user files (songs etc.) but I can still access everything on the other drive from my new os partition. It would have been easier if I had made a timemachine backup which really should be the first step of this guide. Now I need to figure out how to fix my old os or set up the second partition as the default boot.

Daff,
OS X boot disc in and boot into -s mode with it.
type fdisk -e /dev/rdisk0 (change the rdisk number if need be), setpid 1 (I’m assuming OS X is on your first partition), AF, quit, reboot.
that should work!

hmmm I waited for AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement.kext to show up at the bottom of the extensions but I got a grey screen that fell down beforehand that locked everything up and said I must reboot. Now I have the kernel panic. Must I start over from scratch? How do I avoid this next time?? I’m not an avid mac user so maybe the keyt files don’t show up at the bottom of the directory as they would in windows??
All I really wanted 10.5.4 for was the Atheros / IBM wireless card support, and maybe improved Radeon video support since Final Cut crashes alot and dvd player doesn’t work at all.

@P – I have the same problem as Steve. I get a black screen after the upgrade from 10.5.2 to 10.5.3. Option -x did not do anything,I got to the same black screen and I see the HD working. After 5 min it stop working. I rebooted with option -v and I get through all the messages, then to a light blue screen and then to the black screen again.
I have tried the upgrade many times using the instructions on this blog. I also tried the Kalyway method and got to the same place a Black Screen.
I’m using a Lenovo T61 .

Hi Jagat, i had some of the same probs as you. when you boot, dont hit -v, just hit enter. also for some who are having problems on restart try different things such as when you partition your drive select guid instead of mbr and dont select any options whatsoever. this is how i solved all my problems and works great.

When I click Get Info on the InstallAtStartup folder it pops up for a split second then goes away and opens my Home folder. So I am unable to get to the file I need to change before I restart. Any ideas on what I can do to resolve this issue?

Hey
Ive had a similar problem during the 10.5.2 to 10.5.3 update.
I moved the .kext file to the trash and shortly after the mac froze and told me I must restart. Now its getting stuck at the apple loading screen and doesnt appear to want to budge. Ive tried loading in safe mode and nothing happens :(
Any suggestions?
Thankyou

I installed Mac OS X Leopard 10.2 . Then i downloaded Mac Os x 10.3 combo update and deleted the AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement.kext file
and after the update i went to installstartup folder but i could not access the folder so i went to get info but the screen disappeared.so i copied the folder and pasted it in the desktop and edited the script and replaced it with the original one. After restarting , i booted to leopard and then it restarted automatically without any message. what should i do ?
